TUC damns AMA’s war on street hawkers

The Trades Union Congress has lashed out at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly for the “erratic” attempts to rid the city’s streets of hawkers.

The Secretary General of the worker’s union, Yaw Asamoah told Joy News’ Dzifah Bampoh on Tuesday, that taking hawkers out of the streets without providing an alternative market will not work.

He said the several failed attempts by the Assembly to win the war on the decongestion of the city’s streets is a testament that the policy is ineffective.

According to him, the AMA’s attempt is only a “nine day wonder,” hinting that the hawkers will soon return to the streets.

Mr Asamoah however expressed worry that the activities of the AMA officials will deny the hawkers their sources of income, suggesting that the AMA must take a more holistic approach to solving the problems of street hawking.

He was even more depressed with the alleged assaults said to have been unleashed on the hawkers by the AMA officers.

But the AMA has dismissed the assertions by the TUC.

Spokesperson for the Assembly, Nuumo Blafo said the argument that the AMA is taking food off the table of the hawkers should not be entertained.

He argued vehemently that the hawkers sell their wares at a risk of being knocked down by vehicles, a situation which happens routinely, insisting it is in the hawkers’ own interest to be out of the streets.

He also dismissed assertions that the AMA has failed to provide alternative markets for the hawkers to sell their wares.

Nuumo Blafo opined that the hawkers market close to the Nkrumah Circle has remained empty ever since it was built, accusing the hawkers of abandoning the markets for the streets.

He said the street is for vehicles; pavements for passengers and the markets for hawkers.

The Assembly will not allow hawkers to take over the streets, he insisted.

He chided the media for not trumpeting the good works of the AMA and rather chose to magnify little slips by its workers.
