T-Poly demands Daily Graphic’s apology over lesbian lecturer dismissal

The Management of Takoradi Polytechnic has faulted Daily Graphic's reportage on the dismissal of a Lecturer accused of forcing students into lesbianism.

According to them, the Paper without any proof concluded that many students have been converted into lesbians.

It also challenged the Paper’s claim that, female students were being denied deserving examination marks for disregarding the lesbian lecturer’s sexual advances.

The school’s Management is therefore demanding a retraction of these statements and an apology from the Daily Graphic for harming the Polytechnic’s reputation.

The following is the Polytechnic’s full statement:

The attention of the Management of Takoradi Polytechnic has been drawn to newspaper publications and radio broadcasts concerning the dismissal of Miss. Sheba Quartey, Senior Instructor at the Department of Fashion Design and Technology of the Polytechnic and wishes to react as follows:

-The Polytechnic took the decision to dispense with services of Miss. Quartey after a Disciplinary Committee duly constituted by the school established some adverse findings against her regarding her relationship with some female students in the Fashion Department.

-Management is of the considered view that Miss. Quartey’s behavior has not been consistent with her fiduciary relationship as a Senior Instructor, tasked with moulding students.

-Nonetheless, many of the news items in question, particularly the one by Daily Graphic issued on Thursday, May 26, 2011 contained a number of factual inaccuracies intended to impugn the hard-won repute of the Polytechnic.

-The Daily Graphic’s story unnecessarily made hasty conclusions that cast aspersion on students of the Polytechnic, an instance being the fifth paragraph where he concluded without any proofs that “many of the students [of the Polytechnic] have been converted to lesbianism and become addicted to it”.

-Management of the Polytechnic strongly refutes Daily Graphic’s slant and the false motives it is imputing on the over 8, 000 student population of the Polytechnic.

-In this regard, we demand that Daily Graphic apologize to the Polytechnic for this unwarranted slur on its reputation.

-How the paper came to this conclusion is anybody’s guess, but without any proof to that effect, we find Daily Graphic’s write up in bad taste and therefore demand a retraction of the offending article. Daily Graphic, in this instance, just failed to live up to its editorial obligation of accurate and fair reportage!

-The paper made other sweeping statements that cast doubt on the integrity of examinations conducted by the Polytechnic. The Polytechnic vehemently denies any such false assertions.

-It must be pointed out that offering sexual favor is not the basis for passing examinations at Takoradi Polytechnic. The Polytechnic has in place stringent measures including external moderations in the conduct of its examinations.

-Actually, the students that brought complaints against Miss. Quartey did not at any point claim that she has threatened to fail them in their papers. This was never an issue of consideration by the Disciplinary Committee. What the students were protesting is her obsession for their attention and eagerness to embarrass them in class when she is ignored. Management felt these advances were inconsistent with her role as a Senior Instructor.

-Thus, there was nothing about marks for which Daily Graphic should be making these unfair allegations.

-The Polytechnic wants to assure the public, especially parents and guardians and other stakeholders of the Polytechnic, that their wards are in safe hands and the Polytechnic would not allow a situation where the morals of these students are compromised. It is the ethos of the Polytechnic that no student, and worker for that matter, is put in harm’s way.

-Indeed, the swift response of the Polytechnic in constituting the Disciplinary Committee that led to the sacking of the Senior Instructor is an indication of the resolve of Management to maintain sanctity on campus. Her dismissal affirms clearly that Takoradi Polytechnic does not condone deviant acts, whether by students or staff. The Polytechnic will uphold its integrity at all times.

-Meanwhile, the Guidance and Counseling Unit of the Polytechnic is being charged to offer support services to the affected students.

Thank you.
