New Toolkit on HIV and Human Rights Advocacy for MSM

New Toolkit on HIV and Human Rights Advocacy for Men Who Have Sex with Men

Dear all,

The Global Forum on MSM & HIV (MSMGF) is pleased to announce the official launch of the new Speaking Out Advocacy Toolkit, a training-of-trainers designed to support grassroots activists in the development and implementation of rights-based advocacy projects.  Focusing specifically on men who have sex with men (MSM) and HIV, the toolkit addresses key issues for this population, including stigma and discrimination, service provision for MSM, fund raising for MSM projects, working in hostile environments, and United Nations Human Rights mechanisms.

First piloted with 23 activists from 14 different countries at the International AIDS Conference in July 2010, the toolkit emphasizes a participatory approach.  Aiming to foster engaged, dynamic discussions between trainers and participants, the toolkit includes a large number of exercises, enhanced by detailed activity descriptions and handouts.

While the toolkit deals with common issues occurring across regions, effective advocacy strategies to address these issues may differ drastically from country to country.  The toolkit represents a resource to aid advocates in developing their own locally-appropriate advocacy initiatives, designed for adaptation depending on needs, skill levels, and previous experience of local communities.  To foster the development of tailored responses, the MSMGF is currently working with grassroots organizations in North Africa, Central America and Southeast Asia to create regional adaptations of the Speaking Out Advocacy Toolkit.  These adaptations are scheduled for release in December 2011.

We wish to send a big thank you to our partners who participated in the pilot training, whose rich discussions and valuable feedback helped to shape the current version of the toolkit.  We also wish to send great thanks to the Levi Strauss Foundation, whose generous support has made this toolkit possible.

The toolkit can be found on the MSMGF's website at http://www.msmgf.org/index.cfm/id/262.

Thank you!
