Presbyterian Church U.S.A. to allow gay and lesbian clergy The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) on Tuesday voted to allow the ordination of openly gay and lesbian ministers. The church put the vote to its 173 presbyteries, or governing bodies, nationwide. On Tuesday, the Twin Citites Area presbytery, which covers Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, became the 87th presbytery — and the deciding vote — to approve an amendment that will remove the constitutional requirement that all ministers, elders and deacons live in “fidelity within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman or chastity in singleness.” The change, which opens up the possibility that people in same-sex relationships can be considered for ordination, is expected to take effect starting on July 10. It is the latest move by a Protestant denomination toward the inclusion of gay and lesbian clergy. “I see this as an opportunity to build a stronger church. Mr. Francis Agadiah told The Chronicle in an exclusive interview that the inclusion of sign language on the state TV network, GTV, had made a significant impact on hearing impaired persons, especially, students, who use the sign language interpretation to understand the news and stay abreast with all the happenings in the world. This also keeps them informed in decision making. While appealing to other TV networks to emulate GTV, Mr. Agadiah also encouraged all public agencies and institutions, such as the hospitals, security agencies and media houses, to engage the services of special instructors to receive and address the plight of persons with all kinds of impairment. Touching on factors that could lead to deafness, the special teacher mentioned excessive exposure ...

Zongo youth, Baptist Church in near bloody clash

Image
by Chris Twum The timely intervention of the police averted what could have been a bloody clash between the Zongo community at Madina, a suburb of Accra, and the Baptist Church in the same community, over a parcel of land that the two groups are claiming ownership of. The Zongo community claims the land belongs to the community, and that the church cannot take possession of it. The dispute over the land was said to have travelled to the courts, where the Baptist Church won, but the local community would not accept the ruling, and rather went to the land in contention and locked up the church and school situated there, disrupting academic work for the morning. The leadership of the Baptist Church reported the incident to the Madina police, who immediately responded, and came to remove the locks and barricades, before the pupils could have access to their classrooms, and the teachers their offices. This incurred the wrath of the protesting community residents, who had already gathered on...
